A leadership program that targets social inclusion was launched at two public schools in St George this month. MATES, which stands for Mates Assisting To Engage Socially, aims to help children develop a sense of belonging by encouraging greater opportunities for them to socialise.

Media support is crucial in getting the social inclusion message out. Too often the focus of the media is on negative or sensationalist stories, this is a story on 2 principals who are committed to fostering an engaged student cohort and nurturing a sense of belonging. In being pilot schools for the MATES program, they are not only empowering their own students but are an integral part of the process of empowering thousands more students.
